Bridge Inspection Team Leader / Project Engineer Olympia, WA

We’re looking for an experienced Bridge Inspection Team Leader/Project Engineer with the energy and passion to support and grow our efforts in the Pacific Northwest. Salary range for this position is $85,000 to $100,000.

Fickett Structural Solutions, Inc., is a structural engineering, inspection and testing company headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin, with offices in Olympia, WA, Milwaukee, WI, and Minneapolis, MN and remote employees in Florida, Pennsylvania, and Texas that support our four offices. We work nationally for Federal, State, and Local Agencies in addition to architects, engineers, and contractors. We mostly provide structural inspections and related engineering services for bridges, culverts, locks and dams and various highway ancillary structures. We’re Hiring! An Intern or Entry-Level Engineer

We are currently looking for an intern or entry-level engineer based out of our Middleton or Milwaukee Offices who can assist our team with both performing and reporting on structural inspections.

Duties and Responsibilities

Perform structural inspections of bridges, culverts, dams, buildings, and ancillary structures throughout the United States

  • Create inspection reports based upon inspection findings
  • Reads and processes information from shop drawings and verifies/compares shop drawings to field conditions
  • Reviews drawings and engineering plans for compliance with applicable standards.
  • This position will include immediate training upon start
  • Ability to work in self-guided manner without direct supervision
  • Work in a safe manner and assists with ensuring safety at the job site in accordance with applicable guidelines at all times
  • Assists in client presentations and/or meetings
  • Other responsibilities, as required / assigned 

Qualification Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering from and accredited college (for consideration of the internship must be working towards this degree)
  • Preference for previous co-op or internship with DOT and/or bridge inspection experience
  • EIT preferred at start but will be required within 6 months of start
  • Drafting experience is a plus
  • Ability to read and understand plans, specifications, and shop drawings
  • Comfort with working at heights utilizing rope access, lifts, ladders, and scaffolding
  • Ability to walk around bridge and construction sites with uneven terrain
  • Ability to perform out of town work with consecutive overnight stays
  • Travel up to 25% of the year

Hiring–Quality Assurance Specialist

We are seeking a Quality Assurance (QA) Specialist – Nondestructive Testing (NDT) Level II in MT and UT who will report to our Minneapolis, Minnesota office.

We provide inspection and testing services during the construction of commercial structures such as buildings, stadiums and parking ramps as well as in-service inspections of bridges and ancillary structures. This is a direct hire position, not a contractor role.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Perform visual inspections (VT) and NDT of structural steel for use in the construction of buildings, bridges, dams, and ancillary structures utilizing MT Yoke method and UT Shear Wave method as specified by design, shop, and as-built drawings, specifications, and applicable industry codes.
  • Coordinates inspections and NDT with site project manager or responsible person in charge.
  • Prepares timely, detailed reports of the inspection and testing results, including descriptions, drawings, photos, etc., of nonconforming details with deficiencies identified.
  • Other responsibilities, as required/assigned.


  • 2-year technical degree in NDT or equivalent combination of training, knowledge, and on-the-job experience.
  • Requires documented proof of experience/on-the-job-training to meet the Level II requirements to SNT-TC-1A.
  • Must be able to successfully pass NDT Level II Certification to SNT-TC-1A and Fickett Structural Solutions’ internal certification requirements for MT and UT.
  • Holds a current certificate as a Certified Weld Inspector (CWI) with D1.1 or D1.5 work experience or successfully acquire within 6 months of hire.
  • Holds ICC Special Inspector Certifications in Structural Steel and Bolting and Structural Welding or successfully acquire within 6 months of hire.
  • 5 or more years of relevant experience with structural steel welding inspections, structural steel bolting inspections, NDT and writing comprehensive reports is desired but not required.
  • Is thoroughly familiar with the scope and limitations of the methods for which he/she is certified and is able to exercise assigned responsibility without direct supervision.
  • Ability to define and document problems, collect data, evaluate facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to read and understand plans, specifications, industry codes and shop drawings.
  • Ability to work outside in various types of weather conditions.
  • Ability to work at height and near traffic utilizing appropriate PPE and safeguards.
  • Ability to drive company vehicle or own vehicle to various job sites.


  • Experience with Word and Excel required.
  • Experience (previous employment or coursework) with Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) is useful but not required.
  • Experience using various computer devices including laptops, iPads, tablets, etc. is required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong sense of integrity and professional ethics.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to work in both office and non-office environments, such as construction job sites and fabrication shops.
  • Ability to speak, hear, sit, reach, bend, stoop, climb, balance, walk and stand for long periods, traverse uneven job site surfaces, lift or move up to 50 pounds with or without assistance, handle power tools, utilize various testing instruments, reach with hands/arms, crawl/walk into small spaces, maneuver over fences and up steep embankments, climb ladders/ascend heights, climb into bucket truck lifts and be lifted bodily at heights above head height. 
  • Ability to tolerate working at heights is a requirement of this position. 
  • Ability to wear appropriate fall protection equipment.
  • Vision abilities must include close and distance vision with or without correction, color vision, depth perception, the ability to adjust focus and meet the minimum eye examination requirements of the AWS D1.1 code.
  • Ability to adjust and work in varied weather and temperature conditions, as well as dusty and noisy environments.

Other Working Conditions:

  • Ability to work a 40-hour work week; ability to work overtime as needed.
  • Trips out of town to work at customer job sites or other locales may be required and may require overnight stays as necessary.
  • Travel requirements will include the ability to drive a vehicle, fly in an airplane and/or take other conveyances such as bus or train, depending on the project location.
  • A valid, current driver’s license with a good driving record is required. Ability to drive on behalf of the company is subject to the Company’s insurance carrier’s review of driving records.
  • All employees who drive their personal vehicles on company business are expected to carry at least $300,000 of liability protection on their personal auto policy.
  • Pre-employment drug testing and background screening required.

Volunteering at MOMs

At our recent annual meeting, our employees had the privilege of volunteering at the non-profit Middleton, whose mission is ‘Preventing Homelessness. Ending Hunger.’ We brought over 170 pounds of food, a cash donation and provided MOM with 34 hours of volunteer work!  It is such a great organization and we were grateful to be able to give back to our community.

Fickett Structural Solutions, Inc. welcomes Alyssa Escobedo as Bridge Inspection Team Leader / Project Engineer in our Olympia Office. Alyssa will be joining us in late July from BNSF.  She comes to us with over 7 years of bridge inspection, design and related experience. Some of her roles while at BNSF were Structures Supervisor, Manager Structures Design, and Assistant Director Bridge Engineer Inspection & Maintenance.  Alyssa has a BS in Civil Engineering from the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science at Northwestern University.

The addition of Alyssa as Bridge Inspection Team Leader / Project Engineer will increase our capacity in the Pacific Northwest allowing Andy Packard opportunities to connect with existing clients and develop relationships with potential clients. Alyssa’s bridge experience enhances our capabilities as a valued resource for our public clients. Todd Niemann, PE, joins Fickett Structural Solutions, Inc.

Fickett Structural Solutions, Inc. welcomes Todd Niemann as a Principal Engineer and Manager of our Twin Cities Area Office. Todd will be joining us in late June following his retirement from Minnesota DOT (MNDOT). He comes to us with over 30 years of experience, 27 of which have been with MNDOT. Some of Todd’s roles while with MNDOT were Metals Quality Engineer, Structural Metals and Bridge Inspection Engineer, and Welding Engineer. He has a BS in Welding Engineering and has been a PE since 1994. Todd has been active with a number of associations and committees throughout his career, including AASHTO, AWS, FHWA, NSBA as well as working with NCS, MWBPP, and the SSPC. He has also been involved in several research projects with NCHRP and Purdue University and their S-Brite Program.

The addition of Todd fills a role on our Management Team and provides someone who can manage multiple projects, provide leadership and mentoring to our staff, and grow our operations in Minnesota and beyond. Todd’s experience and expertise enhances our capabilities as a company both with our public and private clients. We’re looking to Todd to help us continue to expand our involvement on a local and national level. We couldn’t be more excited to have Todd join the company.

We’ve had an exciting 18 months since Andy Packard joined us and opened our Olympia, WA Office.  Six months in, Michael Dominguez joined us after graduating from Saint Martin’s University. With Andy and Michael’s hard work and some support from our Wisconsin staff, we’ve established many great clients in the Pacific Northwest. With this initial success comes excitement and anticipation for our continuing growth in the PNW.
